TRANSFORMERS HEADCANON: Decepticons and Predacons
I’ve noticed in the appearance of the Decepticon Army, there comes a time when we see the ‘Cons assuming fewer vehicle Alt-Modes and more “monstrous” Alt-Modes. I have to attribute this to the research Shockwave does with the CNA of Predacons (as we saw in TF: Prime).
For those not familiar with this series, they introduced "Predacons" as the bestial predecessors to the Cybertronian race. This is in a similar manner to how dinosaurs existed on Earth before the rise of mammals and the evolution of humanity.
In the TF: Prime series, Shockwave ends up "resurrecting" several Predacons, including the dragon-like Predaking, to join the Decepticon army. However, I think Shockwave wanted to create a new form of Decepticon soldier that was stronger and more powerful than normal, using Predacon CNA to enhance their physical prowess.
We saw in the “Transformers: Fall of Cybertron” video game that Shockwave augmented Grimlock and his team, giving them the abilities of "creatures from another world" (dinosaurs) the Shockwave was studying by means of a dimensional portal he has created. I imagine these were some of Shockwave’s first experiments in augmenting Cybertronians with Predacon CNA, which is why the Dinobots, and there were setbacks (such as their decreased intelligence).
Once Shockwave has perfected the means of reconstructing Predacon CNA, he uses it to augment the Decepticon army to make them more powerful… but this results in more monstrous Decepticons showing up in the ranks (Headmasters [who all have animal forms], Predacons, Terrorcons, Seacons, etc).
