The Monsters Are Our Heroes: The Evil Dead!

As we are coming closer to Halloween, I felt it time to post some monsters to add to one's villainous cast. In this post, I present the Dybbuk. This fiend is from Jewish folklore and is an evil spirit-creature that possesses the corpses of the dead, moving their bodies in a horrific mimicry of life and performing disturbing behaviors intended to frighten and terrify the living.

Dybbuk are the inspiration for the Kandaran Demons, aka, the "Deadites" of the Evil Dead franchise.

ATTACKS

Disturbing Behavior: While possessing a corpse, the dybbuk can make the corpse perform disturbing behaviors, including spinning its head all the way around, vomiting blood, or making a quadruped walk like a biped. Anyone that witnesses this behavior must make a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened of the dybbuk. The frightened target can repeat the saving throw at the end of their turn,  removing the frightened effect with a success.

ABILITIES

Create The Evil Dead: As an Action, a dybbuk can possess the corpse of a human or beast it is Close to. The dybbuk is now effectively the possessed corpse, changing into an undead, though it now appears to be alive. It gains a number of temporary hit points equal to the corpse’s maximum hit points it had in life (the average human bystander has 4 Hit Points).

Incorporeal: A dybbuk is a malicious incorporeal demon. It can move through creatures or objects. It takes one-half damage from all physical attacks. As an evil demon spirit, it can fly and hover in place.

Magic Resistance: A dybbuk has Advantage on all saving throws against magical spells. It takes one-half damage from all magic attacks.

Sunlight Vulnerability: Exposure to direct sunlight purges a dubbuk from the body of a corpse.

Here's a quick one-shot idea you can use for a special Halloween session of The Monsters Are Our Heroes:

The Scion (the Vampire Prince of Los Angeles) has heard of the disturbing events that took place at the Monde Apartment building during the Labor Day weekend. Recognizing the work of the Evil Dead, the Scion gathers his Coven of Monsters (the PCs) and tasks them to go to the Monde Apartments, find the copy of Naturom Demonto left behind, and return with it before more Dybbuk can be unleashed!

When the PC Monsters arrive to the apartment complex, they must contend with navigating the hazardous, crumbling building that is falling apart around them, due to the recent violent earthquake, as well as a number of tenants that have already been possessed by the Evil Dead.

Have fun!
